The Akbash Dog derives from ancient roots in Western Turkey. There it lived as a guard dog for local shepherds. Because of its geographical isolation, the breed remained very pure in form for hundreds of years. They may even be the original breeding stock for many of the large, European guarding breeds.
Akbash Dogs have been imported to North America, where they guard livestock from wolves and bears. Breeders have also begun programs to maintain and improve the physical type and temperament. They can be socialized with frequent contact at an early age and live well with families that can match their energy and love of activity. The breed is recognized as a member of the Canadian Kennel Club's Miscellaneous Class.
